A geologist student of Lagos State University (LASU) has
been clubbed to death over alleged armed robbery.
Mr. Ifechukwude Gabriel and another student, simply
identified as Kazeem, were allegedly killed by some local vigilance group at
the Ajala community in Badagry, in the outskirts of Lagos.
The two friends had gone to the area to visit a female
friend and were returning home when they were accosted by some members of the
vigilance group who accused them of coming to spy for armed bandits as robbers
had raided the area the previous week.
The victims, aged 24 and 25, were said to have shown them
their identity cards, but the vigilance group said only their leader would set
them free if they were found not guilty as accused.
It was learnt that when the leader of the group finally
arrived at the scene, he allegedly intimidated the young men with a gun and
handcuffed them.
The leader simply identified as Dele, was said to have ordered
his boys to march the strangers to the community leader (Baale) but as he was
trying to put back the locally-made pistol in his side pocket, he mistakenly
pulled the trigger and he shot himself dead.
His death infuriated the members of the group who immediately
started clubbing the victims till they died.
It was gathered that the state Commissioner
of Police, Mr Umar Manko, is already aware of the matter and has ordered the
exhumation of the bodies for autopsy. A police source at Panti said one person
has been arrested
