Tragedy struck in Delta State Nigeria when a butcher, simply identified as Chinedu, was killed by a cow he was trying to slaughter at a market.
It was gathered that the butcher was mowed down when he was pursuing the cow, that was trying to escape the “hangman’s noose”. But in a twist of fate, the wild cow turned against the owner, swooped on him and head-butt him severally on his chest and belly, killing him instantly.
But some sympathizers who could not bear the gory sight likened the incident to the hunter now becoming the hunted.”
As if it was the day of cows’ rage, another wild cow, which also did not want to be killed, broke loose yesterday and ran through the busy Airport Road to Effurun where it was eventually caught. Concerned residents called on local and state governments to call the rearers to order. Recall that Fulani herdsmen at Ogume in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, killed 10 youths last April.
They were murdered when the community protested the destruction of their farmlands by the cattle and decided to allegedly kill a cow to compensate for their lost crops.
However, in a reprisal, the Fulani herdsmen killed 10 youths from the community, but it was gathered that the swift intervention of the state government saved what could have resulted in bloodshed.
The Ndokwa West Council later buried the youths even as Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Comrade Ovuzorie Macaulay, who led the government delegation to the peace meeting, warned the cattle rearers against future occurrence. However, the community is still mourning the dead as most of the slain youths were said to be breadwinners of their families.
