It was another black Sunday in Lagos Nigeria as five persons lost their lives when a two-storey building under construction at 29, Onasanya Street, Off Ishaga Road, Surulere collapsed. Five other persons were lucky as they were rescued alive from the rubble.
Eyewitnesses said a part of the building collapsed at about 10:00a.m during the early morning rain that fell across the metropolis. The second part, it was learnt, also caved in at about 12:30p.m just as scores of sympathizers were busy with rescue efforts. Hundreds of people stormed the scene to catch a glimpse of the building and the victims. They lamented that a woman with a child on her back, who came to sell bread to the construction workers, also lost her life.
One of the survivors, Mr. Sakiru Oduba, 38, was a bricklayer at the site. He was rushed to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre, Toll Gate, Ikeja after he was rescued.
Men of the Nigeria Police, Red Cross, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) and members of Rotary Club of Ikate, Rotary International District 9110 Nigeria were sighted at the scene.
LASBCA’s General Manager, Mrs. Animasahun-Odunayo, told newsmen that the owner of the house started the construction without necessary documents from the government, adding that the agency sealed off the building a few weeks ago but the workers broke the seal in order to continue the construction.
But Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Ahmed, said the government would still embark on further investigations to ascertain whether the owner of the building obtained the necessary documents before embarking on the construction.
