Reckitt Benckiser hosts forum on Reflux Disease

At the entrance to your stomach is a valve, which is a ring of muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Normally, the LES closes as soon as food passes through it. If the LES doesn't close all the way or if it opens too often, acid produced by your stomach can move up into your esophagus. This can cause symptoms such as a burning chest pain called heartburn. If acid reflux symptoms happen more than twice a week, you have acid reflux disease, also known as Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Reckitt Benckiser, producers of Gaviscon, organized a forum for leading Gastroenterologists, especially the executive committee members of Society of Gastroenterologists and Herpetologists of Nigeria, (SOGHIN), in Lagos at the weekend. The meeting was attended by a group of highly qualified and accomplished medical professionals from Nigeria, Ghana and Turkey.
With the theme: Optimizing The Management Of Reflux Disease In The 21st Century, the forum had the members of the elite league and other distinguished consultants cut across all areas of Gastroenterology, Pharmacists and others in the medical field to share their views on diverse clinical practice to determine on best ways to tackle the disease.
The meeting was facilitated by a Professor in Gastroenterology at Ege University School of Medicine, Bornova, Izmir, Turkey, Prof. Serhat Bor, who is also the President of Neuro-gastroenterology and Motility Study Group of Turkish Society of Gastroenterology. He emphasised that more awareness must be created in developing countries on how to prevent reflux diseases.
He applauded Reckitt Benckiser for facilitating the forum since it will help make the medical community aware of the extent of reflux diseases in Nigeria and enable them identify the correct patient type, teach the right treatment options and reduce the burden of gastrointestinal reflux disorder.
The Marketing Director, Reckitt Benckiser, Oguzhan Silivrilli who spoke at the event said: “To achieve our purpose and to be meaningful partner to the healthcare community, Reckitt Benckiser continues to invest in its brands in the health and hygiene sectors, in addition to our home brands. Reckitt Benckiser believes it can provide better solutions to patients in need, and the community as a whole.”
He encouraged medical professionals to partner with his organisation in the endeavour of making a positive difference in the lives of patients especially those suffering from reflux disease.
Reckitt Benckiser Nigeria’s journey into healthcare began with the launch of Strepsils Sore Throat Remedy in 2008 and Durex sexual wellbeing product in 2011.
