Police in Rivers State, south south Nigeria
have arrested three persons for allegedly running a baby factory.
The detectives also recovered a day-old
baby boy from the suspects. The names of the suspects were given as,
Dr. Chinyere and a couple, John
and Favour from Umuna Okigiwe in
Imo State.
The syndicate was busted by detectives
attached to the anti-kidnapping unit of the command, led by Jovinus Iwu, a
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
Giving insight into how the syndicate, that
also administers fake fertility drugs on their victims was bust, Iwu said the
unit received information about the activities of the suspects and swung into
action.
According to him, based on the information,
they stormed a hospital at
Elelewon, where they found a day-old baby and arrested the suspects.
According to Iwu, desperate women pay the
syndicate as high as N6 million, N4.5 million or N1.5 million to procure a
baby.
It is a pathetic situation, they smile to
the bank, live in affluence, drive exotic cars and some of the cars were
received, Iwu said.
He narrated how the syndicate deceived
their victims. According to him, they usually injected chemicals that made the
stomach of the victims to protrude, as if they were pregnant.
This lasts for nine months, before they
would inject another drug that could make them unconscious. While unconscious,
the syndicate would lace the victims with blood of animal over their bodies,
including their private parts, to create the impression that they were
delivered of a baby.
Similarly, the purported born baby would be
laced with the blood of the same animal. And when the victim becomes conscious,
the syndicate would present a baby to her, claiming she was the one delivered
of the baby.
But one of the suspects, john, said he didn’t
steal the baby found on them. He said he had accommodation problem but didn’t
have money to pay his house rent.
According to him also, it was as a result
of the accommodation problem that he and his wife, Favour, agreed to sell their
baby at the rate of N300,000.
Dr. Chinyere said she was not a quack
doctor as she was described by the police.
However, she refused to disclose the university
where she obtained her degree.
