In the Edo State incident, the Catholic priest of St. Thomas church, Sobe in Owan West Local Government Area, Rev, Fr. Peter Ayala killed himself when he was cleaning his gun on Sunday.
Rev Father Ayala who was due to conduct the morning mass at 7am was said to be cleaning the gun inside his apartment within the church premises, when it reportedly went off and killed him.
The incident was said to have thrown the church into confusion as both mass servers and church elders, after frantic efforts to know what went wrong, found the priest lying dead in his apartment.
The elders were said to have reported the incident to the Bishop of the Auchi Diocese, Dr. Gabriel Dunia, who conducted a quick investigation with security agents and confirmed that the priest died when the rifle he was cleaning went off.
The incident threw Sobe into mourning as the worshippers, gripped with fear upon hearing the news, gathered near the church premises, discussing the incident in hush tones.
The Edo State police command spokesman, Moses Eguavoen, a Deputy Superintendent, described the incident as unfortunate, adding that he was yet to get the full details.
Meanwhile, 18 persons were on Sunday night murdered by unidentified gunmen in two villages of Borikyo Ward in Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State.
Sources from the two connumities told newsmen that the gunmen numbering over 30, stormed Agena and Agbaaye villages at about 8pm and started shooting sporadically as they moved from house to house, maiming and killing anyone in sight.
The gunmen reportedly operated without any hindrance or resistance just as they alleged that there was no security intervention.
Our source, who did not want his name in print, said that villages within Borikyo have been under the attack of armed robbers since March this year, adding that in June, the bandits invaded Ayati and dispossessed their victims of valuables, killing one person and injuring many others.
“This time, when they attacked the two villages on Sunday night, they killed seven people in Agena and another four in Agbaaye. The other seven which brings the latest killing to 18, were gunned down while in search of an escape route,” the source said.
The villagers fled and took refuge in other places for fear of another invasion since they cannot ascertain the identity of the bandits.
“We don’t know who they are. Before now, they would rob us but this time, they did not rob anybody. So, we are confused and worried,” the villagers said.
The state Police Commissioner, Adams Audu, confirmed the killings and burning of houses by the invaders, but declined comments on the number of casualties, saying the command would not want to speculate until investigation on the matter was concluded.
Meanwhile, unknown gunmen at the weekend in Kaduna killed a staff of National Steel Raw Materials Exploration Agency, (NSRMEA) located in Malali, Kaduna North council area. The late Ibrahim Mohammed Tella was said to be on a motorcycle on his way from the Tipper Garage, Malali Village along with his six years old boy when the gunmen approached him and shot him from the rear and zoomed off.
An eyewitness, Ibrahim Saleh, confirmed that the incident happened opposite the popular Destiny College, Malali GRA when suddenly, they heard gunshots. just to discover that the perpetrators had escaped leaving the man in his pool of blood.
Others who didn’t want to be named, also confirmed that the late Tella spent the weekend working on his farm which is across the River Kaduna along the new Yakowa Road. On the fateful day, he left with his son to the garage for lunch when he received a phone call that somebody was waiting for him at the farm and he returned immediately to the farm on a commercial motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, who would not disclose his name, confirmed that three men on another motorcycle were trailing them when suddenly, they started firing at Tella and zoomed off to an unknown destination after confirming that he was dead.
His brother, Yusuf, wondered why Ibrahim, whom he described as a gentleman, would be killed by unknown gunmen. “My brother doesn’t make trouble, so I wonder why someone will just kill him like that, we live everything to God,” he said.
The Kaduna State Police Command’s spokesman, Aminu Lawan, a Deputy Superintendent, confirmed the incident and assured that the force will arrest the suspects.
In another development, three people have been killed and eight others injured in fresh attack on Bama, eastern part of Borno State by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.
Sources said the gunmen attacked a community on the outskirts of Bama town with knives and cudget to slit throats of their victims last weekend. “They would have killed more than three people if the Civilian JTF had not intervened quickly,” a source said, adding that troops also moved into the area when they were alerted.
Hospital sources said eight injured persons were brought to the emergency unit (names withheld) last weekend but could not ascertain if they came from Bama.
Bama is about 67 kilometres from Maiduguri, the state capital and former stronghold of Boko Haram insurgents. Bama which also host an Army Battalion, has witnessed coordinated attacks in recent times including those on Police Mobile Barracks.
A military source hinted that the Boko Haram men have taken to sneaking into their victims’ houses and slitting their throats rather than firing shots which they believe could attract the attention of the youth volunteers or the security forces.
