Massacre in Borno as 35 killed in Boko Haram, JTF shoot-out

About 35 people including suspected Boko Haram members were killed on Sunday in Borno State in two attacks by insurgents.
Sources said that some gunmen believed to be Islamist sect members attacked the Police Mobile (MOPOL) base at Bama on Sunday morning, killing a policeman.

The attack, the second in three months, was described by residents as deadly. Many policemen and civilians died in the May attack.
The Joint Task Force (JTF) spokesman, Lt-Colonel Sagir Musa, who confirmed the incident, said Boko Haram insurgents used sophisticated weapons in the Sunday attack on Bama as well as Malamfatori, a Nigerian-Niger border community, north of Borno State. He, however, said the two attacks were repelled by the task force.
“Troops have successfully repelled Boko Haram terrorists attack on Mobile Police (MOPOL) base at Bama town. Terrorists using sophisticated weapons and Improvised Explosive Devices launched attacks at about 6:45am on August 4, 2013. The encounter led to the death of one policeman and 17 Boko Haram terrorists,” Musa said Monday.
He also disclosed that two soldiers were wounded. He said various arms were recovered after the attack. These include four Toyota Hilux vehicles, 10 AK 47 rifles, two G3 rifles, 10 x 40 mm bombs, three RPG tubes, 85 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and three motorcycles.
He said the other attack at Malamfatori occurred at about 10am on Sunday when some Boko Haram terrorists armed with sophisticated weapons attacked a Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) at MalamFatori, a border town, killing two soldiers.
“The attack led to the death of two soldiers and 15 Boko Haram members. Normalcy has since returned to the area,” he stated. Col. Musa urged residents to assist security agencies with credible information on the insurgents.
