Police are questioning a cleaner on suspicion of raping a four-year-old girl on a school bus in India, Sky News reports.
The 26-year-old man was arrested after
the girl claimed he asked her to come to the back seat of the bus to
show her some magic tricks before assaulting her.
According to the police, complaint filed
by the girl’s parents indicated that she and her friend were the first
to board the bus after school in the district of Thane in north Mumbai
while the man was still cleaning it.
Although the girl screamed and her friend went to help her, the man allegedly threatened to kill them both if they told anyone.
Inspector SK Mohite said, “The cleaner called her to the back seat on the pretext of showing her some tricks.
“He then caught the girl and raped her.”
He added, “There was no woman attendant on the bus at that time.”
Mohite said the girl had undergone a medical examination and doctors confirmed she had been sexually assaulted.
“Medical details and investigations into the cleaner’s past are being gathered,” he added.
Local reports say this is the second such incident reported this year.
In February the cleaner of a school bus was arrested by police in Malad for allegedly molesting a three-year-old girl.
News of the alleged assault comes days
after four men were sentenced to death over the gang-rape of a student
in Delhi in December.
The victim died from the brutal assault, which led to weeks of protests over the treatment of women and girls in India.
Mumbai has also been recently rocked by
the gang rape of a photographer in August while she was on assignment in
the city with a male colleague.
Five suspects have been arrested over the allegations and are expected to be charged this week.
