Country Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),
Jean Gough has said 11 million Nigerian children are suffering from
malnutrition.
Gough who was in Maiduguri, Borno State capital noted that poverty and
ignorance were mostly responsible for malnutrition in most developing countries
of Africa. But she said UNICEF would be ready to provide information on
nutrition of children to women.
She promised that UNICEF would be ready to assist in tackling the
challenge. The fund provides humanitarian and development assistance to
children and mothers in developing nations.
She said the organisation has resolved to open an office in the
Maiduguri “to assist government eradicate polio, provide information on
malnutrition and develop primary healthcare.” She said the Bauchi office of the
fund was far from Borno hence the need to open an office in Maiduguri.
