Concerned over the increasing rate of diabetes in Nigeria, Fidson
Healthcare Plc has joined the International Diabetes Federation, World
Health Organization (WHO) and other global organisations in educating
Nigerians on the prevention of diabetes, in commemoration of this year’s
World Diabetes Day.
This was in the wake of recent statistics from the International
Diabetes Federation, which reported a global estimate of 371 million
people living with diabetes as at 2012, with 15 million people from
Africa.
The continent was also reported to have the highest mortality rate
due to diabetes and the number of people with diabetes was likely to
double over the next 20 years.
Reports from WHO showed that more than 80 per cent of diabetes deaths
occurred in low- and middle-income countries and that diabetes would be
the 7th leading cause of death in 2030.
The Product Manager, Fidson Healthcare Plc, Mr. Friday Enaholo, while
buttressing the IDF and WHO reports, said the rate of diabetes globally
was worrisome and should be a major concern for Nigerians, especially
as Africa was projected to be harder hit by the disease.
Enaholo advised that living a healthy lifestyle through eating
balanced diet, avoiding excessive alcohol intake, engaging in regular
physical exercise, reducing salt intake, maintaining a healthy body
weight and avoid smoking, among other predisposing factors are ways of
preventing diabetes.
