Man steals N6.9m from ATM, nabbed inside bank toilet

A 27-year old man, who tried to put into practice what he learned on YouTube has landed in trouble. Jamilu Hassan was caught red handed after he successfully broke into an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), belonging to one of the new generation banks at Utako, and removed N6.83 million.

The suspect, who is now in police custody, told Abuja Metro that he learned the act of breaking into ATMs and vaults without destroying them on popular social media, You Tube.
He said by the method he learned from YouTube, one did not need heavy instruments and appliances to carry out such operation.
He listed the items needed for operations without (withheld by us) attracting the attention of security or passersby.
Jamilu, who admitted being in the business of breaking into ATMs, safes and vaults however, had a bad day when he tried his hands on one of such machines located at Utako district of Abuja.
The suspect, who resides somewhere along the popular Berger Junction, was arrested, following a report to the Utako Police Station that an ATM, had been destroyed and N6.9 million in it removed.
On receiving the report, the police headed to the scene of the incident and started investigation. During investigation, the police after gaining access into the banking hall, discovered that part of the ceiling had been removed and decided to probe further.
As they did, they found that the CCTV security camera had also been tampered with and since they could not get any visuals from the gadget, they conducted a thorough manual search of the entire bank.
First, they checked the offices, got no clue and headed for the toilets. To their amazement, one toilet door was locked from behind. As they forced the door open, they found Jamilu Hassan, taking refuge there.
He was also found to have carefully packed the N6.9 million in a bag and ready to find his way out of the bank.
He was immediately arrested and upon interrogation, he told the police that he actually got access into the bank through one of the windows of the one storey building at about 2am and was busy arranging the money into a bag to leave the place when he started hearing noises from outside and decided to wait until everywhere was calm before he would leave.
