Suspected Boko Haram members struck again in Madagali Local
Government Area of Adamawa State on Friday, killing 11 persons,
including a pastor. The attack came barely a week after the insurgents’
terror unleashed on a Catholic Church in another village in the local
government area left no fewer than 35 persons dead.
In the latest incident, the attackers were said to have audaciously
entered into Gulak, the local government headquarters in the night,
storming the EYN Church at Sabo Gari Gemadai ward and leaving blood and
anguish on their trail.
Confirming the report, Chairman of the council, Mr. Ularamu
Maina disclosed that the insurgents stormed the church at 8.30pm while
the worshippers were having a vigil. The pastor in charge of the church
was among those killed, Maina told Sunday Sun in an interview.
“On entering the church, the attackers started shooting sporadically, killing many people, including the pastor.
“In the ensuing confusion, many residents ran in all directions for
safety, while the attackers continued to unleash terror on innocent
citizens. The town is now deserted as many are fleeing.”
Some of the residents spoken to said the attack came hours after the
Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Ahmadu Fintiri had
visited Chakawa
Village, where last week’s incident occurred to sympathize with the people and donate relief materials to them.
The speaker, who fielded questions from newsmen had called on the
Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, deploy more troops to the
area to ensure security of lives and property in the mountainous
region.
Fintiri observed that the state of emergency was only felt in urban
area in the state, leaving the rural dwellers at the mercy of the
terrorists.
He said unless urgent measures were adopted, people of Madagali Local
Government of Adamawa State, which shares boundary with Borno State
might be forced to migrate en-masse.
Besides the insurgents’ attack on Madagali, it has of recent become a
hotbed of politics as the Deputy Governor, Bala James Ngilari; Special
Adviser on politics to the President, Ahmed Gulak and the Adamawa House
Speaker, Ahmadu Fintiri, all hail from the local government area and
belong to different political groups.
